Common Name: Blackish-purple Epidendrum
Native to: Peru. Epidendrum melanoporphyreum grows on trees in wet mountains around 1300 meters in elevation. This species prefers to grow near the top of trees.
Plant Size: Medium. Epidendrum melanoporphyreum has narrow, reed-like stems with several leaves. Unlike most other species in the genus, Epidendrum melanoporphyreum is deciduous. The leaves are light green and thin.
Flower Size: 1.25 inches
Flower Description: Flowers are produced on a five inch (12.5 cm) tall stem bears a few widely-spaced flowers. The flower stem is dark in color.
Bloom Season: Winter to early Spring
Growing Temperature: Warm
Additional Information: Grow this plant on cork bark or in a slatted pot. Provide warm growing conditions and reduce water and humidity when the leaves begin to fall off the plant in the Autumn. Epidendrum melanoporphyreum has attractive flowers and is worth the effort to grow.
