Epidendrum volutum

Common Name: Rolled-petal Epidendrum
Native to: Panama. Epidendrum volutum grows on trees.
Plant Size: Medium.

Flower Description: Epidendrum volutum produces a 6 inch (15 cm) long arching flower stem that bears one flower. The flowers are fragrant and long-lasting. Flowering stems are produced at the tip of the stems as the growth begins to mature.

Epidendrum tridactylum

Common Name: Three-fingered Epidendrum Orchid
Native to: Mexico south to Panama, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia. Epidendrum tridactylum grows on rock-strewn slopes in wet forests near 1900 meters in elevation. This species is a terrestrial plant.
Plant Size: Medium. Epidendrum tridactylum has reed-like stems that have four or five leaves.

Flower Description: The flowers of Epidendrum tridactylum are produced on a branched inflorescence. The color of the flowers is highly variable.

Epidendrum trialatum

Common Name: Three-winged Epidendrum Orchid
Native to: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama. Epidendrum trialatum grows on trees up to 1000 meters in elevation in hot, semi-deciduous forests and rain forests.
Plant Size: Small. Epidendrum trialatum has short stems with three or four leaves.

Flower Description: The small flowers of Epidendrum trialatum are produced on a 1 inch (2.5 cm) unbranched inflorescence. Several flowers bloom on the stem from Fall to Spring.

Native to: Costa Rica, Panama. Epidendrum storkii grows on trees in cloud forests between 1200 and 2500 meters in elevation.
Plant Size: Small. The size of the plant is rather variable. Epidendrum storkii has leafy, reed-like stems that have up to 10 leaves.

Flower Description: The flowers are produced on terminal infloresences that bear up to four flowers which have a faint, sweet floral scent.

Additional Information: Epidendrum storkii was named in honor of the Mr. Stork who was the original collector. This species is closely related to Epidendrum difforme var. storkii.

Epidendrum selaginella

Common Name: Moss-like Epidendrum Orchid
Native to: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama. Epidendrum selaginella grows on trees between 650 and 2400 meters in elevation.
Plant Size: Miniature. Epidendrum selaginella covers tree branches with its creeping rhizomes that produce short stems with a few leaves on the upper-third of the stem. All parts of plant are small.
Flower Size: Tiny. 0.25 inches (0.5 cm)
Flower Description: The flowers of Epidendrum selaginella are produced on short flower stems that bear up to eight flowers. All the flowers open at once.

Additional Information: Microepidendrum selaginella is really a cute miniature orchid. Grow this species mounted on cork bark and let it ramble and create a solid mass. Keep on the moist side and mist frequently.

Flower Description: The flowers of Epidendrum schlechterianum are produced on a short flower stem that develops at the top of mature stems. There are usually two flowers produced per growth.

Plant Size: Miniature. Epidendrum rousseauae has small, round, smooth pseudobulbs that have one elliptical leaf.

Flower Description: The flowers of Epidendrum rousseauae are produced on a short inflorescence. There are few to several flowers produced per growth. Fragrant.

Additional Information: Epidendrum rousseauae was named after the wife of Mr. Rousseau who was an orchid collector during the late ^th and early 20^th centuries. Flower Size: Up to 3 inches (7.5 cm)
Flower Description: The flowers of Epidendrum pseudepidendrum have narrow green petals and sepals and a striking orange lip. Newly matured growths produce terminal flower stems that have up to five flowers.

Epidendrum eburneum - Ivory-colored Epidendrum

Common Name: Ivory-colored Epidendrum
Native to: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama. Epidendrum eburneum grows on tree trunks on large trees in hot, tropical forests between sea level and 500 meters.
Plant Size: Large. Epidendrum eburneum has large canes that have a few leaves near the top. The plant resembles Epidendrum nocturnum but has different floral characteristics.
Flower Size: 2.25 inches (6 cm)
Flower Description: Flowers are ivory-colored and have thin petals and sepals. The axilary flower stems produce up to six flowers. Fragrant.

Flower Description: The flowers of Epidendrum cirrhochilum are produced on an 8 inch (20 cm) long stem. Several flowers are in bloom at a time.

Additional Information: Epidendrum cirrhochilum is closely related to Epidendrum paniculatum but differs in a few ways. Grow in pots in a coarse growing media and provide warm, humid conditions with adequate air circulation. Large plants make attractive specimens. Easy to grow.

Common Name: Carol's Epidendrum

Native to: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Epidendrum carolii grows wild in the Mexican states of Jalisco and Oaxaca. Its primary habitat is moist oak forests between 500 and 1700 meters in elevation.

Plant Size: Small. The fleshy stems have two or more sword-shaped green leaves.

Flower Size: 0.5 inches (1.75 cm)

Flower Description: The small flowers are produced on a terminal flower stem that grows to 8 inches (20 cm) in height. The flowers have a faint, pleasant scent.

Additional Information: Epidendrum carolii is a compact species that can be grown successfully on cork or tree fern mounts. Provide heat and humidity along with adequate air circulation for best results. The small flowers have a charm of their own.

Epidendrum barbeyanum

Common Name: Barbey-Boissier's Epidendrum

Native to: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, and Venezuela. Epidendrum barbeyanum grows on trees in seasonally dry forests between 500 and 1850 meters in elevation.

Plant Size: Small. Stems are upright and have six or seven leaves distributed along its length.

Flower Size: 2 inches (5 cm)

Flower Description: The large, colorful flowers of Epidendrum barbeyanum are attractive and quite showy. The flowers are formed on a flower stalk that develops from the top of mature stems and bears between five and ten flowers which are fragrant at night.

Bloom Season: Spring.

Additional Information: Epidendrum barbeyanum was named in honor of a Swiss orchid collector who was active in the late 1800's. This species is closely related to Epidendrum difforme but differs in flower color and lip details. Grow mounted on cork or tree fern and provide ample water and fertilizer when the plant is actively growing. Allow a drier winter rest period. Epidendrum barbeyanum is attractive and has fragrant flowers which make it highly desirable for collectors.

Epidendrum antonense - Anton Epidendrum

Epidendrum antonense

Common Name: Anton Epidendrum

Native to: Panama. Epidendrum antonense grows on trees in wet mountain forests from 70 to 800 meters in elevation. The plants are frequently found growing near streams or other areas of surface water.

Plant Size: Small to Medium. Epidendrum antonense has upright, fleshy reed-like stems that are covered in greenish-purple leaves. Grows on trees.

Flower Size: 0.75 inches (2 cm)

Flower Description: The flowers of Epidendrum antonense are produced on a persistent flower stem that grows to 4 inches (10 cm). Don't cut the flower stem when the flowers fade because the stem can produce new flowers for many years. No fragrance.

Bloom Season: Summer.

Additional Information: This species was named for the Anton Valley in Panama because that is where the type specimen was first discovered growing. Mount on cork bark or tree fern plaques or grow in slatted baskets. Epidendrum antonense needs warm, humid growing conditions with lots of air circulation.

Flower Description: The flowers of Epidendrum allochronum are produced at the end of the cane and produce a few purple flowers.

Bloom Season: Late Winter to Early Spring.

Additional Information: Grow Epidendrum allochronum mounted on cork bark or tree fern plaques and provide moisture throughout the year. This species tolerates a wide variety of temperatures and can be reliably grown under Cattleya orchid growing conditions. Provide humidity and air circulation for happy plants.

Additional Information: Grow this species mounted on wood, cork bark, or tree fern plaques. Provide ample water and fertilizer during periods of active growth and keep moist but not wet during the rest of the year.
