Epidendrum hueycantenangense

Common Name: Hueycantantengo Epidendrum
Native to: Mexico. Epidendrum hueycantenangense is native to the Mexican states of Guerrero and Oaxaca where it is found growing between 1800 and 1950 meters. It grows on trees.
Plant Size: Medium. Epidendrum hueycantenangense produces reed-like stems with up to ten fleshy leaves.
Flower Size: 0.75 inches (2 cm)
Flower Description: A few small flowers are produced on a pendulous terminal inflorescence. The three inch-long flower stem can produce new flowers for several years.
Bloom Season: Fall to Winter
Growing Temperature: Warm to Cool
Additional Information: Do not cut the flower stem after the flowers fade because it may produce new flowers for a number of years. Grow mounted on in slatted baskets with coarse fir bark. Provide Cattleya orchid growing conditions.

Common Name: Guerrero Epidendrum
Native to: Mexico. Epidendrum guerrerense is native to the Mexican state of Guerrero in the southern part of the country where it grows between 1800 and 1900 meters in elevation.
Plant Size: Small.
Flower Size: 0.5 inches (1.5 cm)
Flower Description: Epidendrum guerrerense produce between ten an thirty flowers on a pendant terminal inflorescence. Unlike most other orchids, this species will produce flowers from a flower stem for many years. The flowers open at the same time and do not have any fragrance.

Epidendrum anisatum - Anise-Scented Epidendrum

Epidendrum anisatum

Common Name: Anise-Scented Epidendrum

Native to: Mexico. Epidendrum anisatum is found growing in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacan, Guerrero, Mexico, and Morelos. This species prefers to grow on oak trees in wet oak-pine forests.

Plant Size: Small. The stems are cane-like and have ten to fifteen leaves.

Flower Size: 1 inch (2.5 cm)

Flower Description: Flowers are produced on short terminal flower stems and produce a few (between 2 and 8) flowers. The flowers of Epidendrum anisatum have a pleasant anise fragrance.

Bloom Season: Winter to Spring

Growing Temperature: Warm to Cool

Additional Information: Grow mounted or in slatted baskets with a coarse, free-draining media. Provide typical Cattleya orchid conditions with high humidity and adequate air circulation. This species is popular because of its pleasing fragrance.

Common Name: Oestlund's Encyclia

Native to: Mexico. Encyclia oestlundii grows on trees in dry coastal areas near sea level in the Mexican state of Guerrero.

Plant Size: Medium

Flower Size: 1.75 inches (2 cm)

Flower Description: The flowers of Encyclia oestlundii bloom on an upright inflorescence. There are several flowers open at one time. Fragrant.

Bloom Season: Spring to Summer

Growing Temperature: Warm

Additional Information: Grow Encyclia oestlundii mounted on cork bark or tree branch mounts for best results. Provide typical Cattleya growing conditions with additional heat. Keep on the dry side when new growth matures.

Encyclia meliosma

Common Name: Honey-scented Encyclia

Native to: Mexico. Encyclia meliosma is found growing in the Mexican states of Jalisco, Michoacan, Guerrero, Morelos, and Oaxaca where it grows from 300 to 1500 meters in elevation. This species grows on trees in seasonally dry forests and foothills.

Plant Size: Medium. Encyclia meliosma has conical pseudobulbs and one or two fleshy, tongue-shaped leaves.

Flower Size: 1 inch (2.5 cm)

Flower Description: Fragrant; the flowers smell like honey (although the fragrance is faint). Many flowers are produced on a tall (to 100 cm), branched inflorescence

Additional Information: Encyclia meliosma is closely related to Encyclia spatella and Encyclia aenicta.

Encyclia lorata

Encyclia lorata

Common Name: Strap-Lobed Encyclia

Native to: Mexico. Encyclia lorata grows on trees in pine-oak forests in the mountains of the Mexican state of Guerrero where it is found between 1875 and 2100 meters in elevation.

Plant Size: Small. Encyclia lorata has small, round, wrinkled pseudobulbs that have two sword-shaped leaves. Leaves are dark green in color and quite fleshy.

Flower Size: size

Flower Description: Encyclia lorata produces up to nine flowers on an unbranched (occasionally branched) flower spike that blooms among the leaves.

Bloom Season: Spring to Summer

Growing Temperature: Intermediate

Additional Information: Encyclia lorata is called the Strap-lobed Encyclia orchid because of two strap-shaped parts on the midlobe that distinguishes it from other species. Grow mounted on cork or tree fern or grow in a slatted basket. Provide Cattleya growing conditions.

Encyclia atrorubens

Encyclia atrorubens

Common Name: Dark Red Encyclia Orchid

Native to: Mexico. It is found growing between 1100 and 1200 meters in elevation in oak forests in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

Plant Size: Medium. Encyclia atrorubens has round pseudobulbs that have two narrow leaves.

Flower Size: 1.5 inches (3.75 cm)

Flower Description: The flowers are dark, rudy red and similar (if not the same as) Encyclia diota. The plant produces a tall (1 meter) branched flower stem with many flowers.

Bloom Season: Summer

Growing Temperature: Intermediate to Warm

Additional Information: This may be the same as Encyclia diota. Grow mounted on cork or tree fern or in pots with a coarse growing media. Typical Cattleya conditions are acceptable for this species.
