Native to: Sophronitis brevipedunculata is native to Brazil in cool mountain habitats in the area of Minas Gerais where it grows on vellozia trees or on rocks. It is found growing from 1220 to 2000 meters in elevation. The plants are watered by cloudy mists and nightly dews.

Plant Size: Miniture. The pseudobulbs of Sophronitis brevipedunculata are globe-shaped or cylidrical and have one short leathery leaf. The rhizome grows in two ranks.

Flower Size: 1.5 to 3 inches (4 to 7.5 cm)

Flower Description: The flowers of Sophronitis brevipedunculata are light red. The short flower spike carries between 1 and 3 flowers.

Bloom Season: Late Fall.

Growing Temperature: Warm to Cool

Additional Information: Sophronitis brevipedunculata was originaly classified as Sophronitis wittigiana var. brevipedunculata but differs in flower color and geographic distribution. This species is easier to grow and more tolerant of warmer growing conditions than Sophronitis coccinia. Grow Sophronitis brevipedunculata mounted on cork and provide bright light, humidity, and cool growing conditions. This is one of the few species of the genus that tolerate warmer temperatures.

This species does have a near-albino form called "albescens". It is very rare and seldom offered for sale.
