Barkeria scandens
Common Name: Scandent Barkeria
Native to: Mexico. Barkeria scandens is native to the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacan, and Oaxaca. They grow on both trees and rocks between 1300 and 1900 meters in elevation.
Plant Description: Barkeria scandens is similar to Barkeria lindleyana. It has deciduous cylindrical pseudobulbs that produce medium length flowering stems. The roots are very thick and prominent.
Flower Size: 1 1/4 inches to 2 inches (3-5 cm)
Flower Description: The flowers of Barkeria scandens are bright magenta-red and quite striking in appearance. The lip is square, white with markings, and has three keels running the length of the lip. The flower spike is branched and produces many flowers that bloom at once.
Bloom Season: Fall
Temperature: Intermediate.
Additional Information: Barkeria scandens is closely related to Barkeria lindleyana. Grow mounted on branches or slabs or in a slatted basket. Provide bright light and ample water and fertilizer during the growing season. Reduce water when the leaves begin to yellow and drop in the fall. Provide only enough water during the dormant period to keep the stems from drying out.
