Common Name: Wharton's Barkeria


Native to: Mexico. Barkeria whartoniana has a very limited distribution in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the state of Oaxaca. This species grows on rocks and occasionally on trees in hot, dry deciduous forests between 200 and 300 meters in elevation. Rare.


Plant Description: Small. Short cylindrical pseudobulbs have a four to seven leaves and produce an inflorescence at the apex of a maturing growth.

Flower Description: The flowers of Barkeria whartoniana are pale lilac or white. There are dark red or maroon markings on the lip. Flowers are not fragrant.
Bloom Season: Winter to spring in cultivation. Barkeria whartoniana blooms during the fall in the wild.

Additional Information: Barkeria whartoniana has been confused with Barkeria melanocaulon and Barkeria fritz-halbingeriana but differs in minor details in floral structures. Grow mounted on bark, tree fern, or wood. Reduce watering during the plant's dormant season.
