Barkeria obovata
Common Name: Obovate Barkeria
Native to: Mexico to Panama. Barkeria obovata has a very wide distribution and is commonly found growing as a twig epiphyte in disturbed areas. It grows on the West Coast of Mexico on trees between 300 and 800 meters in elevation. In Central America, Barkeria obovata grows between 240 to 3700 meters in elevation.
Plant Description: Barkeria obovata is like many other species in the genus. It has medium height cylindrical pseudobulbs with multiple notes and several horizontal, thin leaves. It is deciduous during the winter.
Flower Size: 1 inch (2 cm)
Flower Description: The flowers of Barkeria obovata are attractive and white with a marked yellow lip. The flowers do not open up completely. Each flower stem produces up to 25 flowers per 5 inch (12.5 cm) flower stem.
Temperature: Intermediate to cool (depending on the elevation where the parent plant originates).
Additional Information: Grow Barkeria obovata mounted on cork or tree fern slabs or potted in a well-drained pot or slatted basket. Keep humidity high year round. Reduce water when the plant is dormant.
