Barkeria melanocaulon
Common Name: Dark-stemmed Barkeria
Native to: Mexico. Barkeria melanocaulon has a limited distribution in the Mexican state of Oaxaca where it grows in deciduous tropical forests and dry live oak forests at an elevation of 1600 to 1700 meters. They grow on trees and rocks. Rare.
Plant Description: These plants have dark stems that are greenish-purple in color. The cylindrical pseudobulbs have several (3 to 6) horizontal leaves. Deciduous.
Flower Description: Flowers of Barkeria melanocaulon are pale concolor rose or pale lilac. The lip is flat like other members of the genus. Each tall stem produces between 3 and 25 blooms per spike. Flowers are not fragrant.

Temperature: Intermediate
Additional Information: Barkeria melanocaulon does best with bright light. Provide ample water and fertilizer during periods of active growth and reduce watering during the dormant period when the plant is leafless. Barkeria melanocaulon is closely related to Barkeria whartoniana but differs in distribution and flower details.
